As the "lifeline" for the patient on hemodialysis, vascular access is a primary focus for quality improvement activities. Dialysis facility staff, other vascular access team members and the patient must work together to:
  • Establish the most appropriate vascular access
  • Maintain the access once established
  • Minimize the risks associated with each vascular access type
  • Preserve future sites for vascular access
Talk with your kidney doctor or dialysis nurse about your vascular access. Be sure that you know what type of vascular access you have, how to take care of it, and especially what to do if you experience problems such as bleeding or infection.
