Due to the increased risk for a variety of infections and a number of vaccine preventable diseases, care should be taken to immunize hemodialysis patients. An immunization program includes patient consent and education, assessment of current vaccinations, implementation of a vaccination schedule and administration of basic vaccinations ( tetanus, pneumovax, influenza, shingles), surveillance, and following state and federal guidelines regarding vaccinations. Additionally, hemodialysis patients are at an increased risk of acquiring infections caused by bloodborne pathogens, particularly Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Infections and, therefore, serology testing and HBV vaccination should occur as part of the patient’s care and treatment.
